Commentary from Professor Schmitt on the creation of the shape for the Shepard Fairey x New Deal Artist Edition Archival Quality Deck:

Dropping 9/28/20: The New Deal x Shepard Fairey deck is an authentic limited edition of 400 with 14 AP’s, screen printed on a new PS Stix shape designed by Paul Schmitt and inspired by Andy Howell’s Disco Gangsters Part Two (the Unspeakable side of the early 90’s Happy Hippies graphic where the happy characters revealed their weapons)

“I took the original Howell DeeGee’s template and scaled down the width from 9 1/8” to 8 5/8”, but kept the same 14” wheelbase that was the standard back in the 1990’s.

I wanted it to be compact with a 6 7/8” Nose and a 6 5/8” tail totaling a mere 31 ¾” in length.”

All decks have the staple ND yellow top veneer with the classic PS Stix Laser Serial Stamp, and this Shepard Fairey model has the collab top screen with Shepard Fairey x New Deal logo lockup. Bottom veneer colors come assorted in classic New Deal 1990 style, including Orange, Red, Purple, Dark Blue, Teal, & Brown bottom veneers.

The Shepard Fairey deck is manufactured for New Deal by Paul Schmitt at PS Stix and screenprinted by master board printer Roland Sanchez.

Shepard Fairey to kick off New Deal Artist Editions Series
shepardblogpost.jpg

OG street artist Shepard Fairey has helped shape our modern day visual culture with iconic imagery originating in an early 90's experiment in phenomenology featuring the infamous wrestler Andre the Giant. But many current day fans of the artist’s work don't realize that as a teenager Fairey ripped hard on a skateboard and found early inspiration in the art and subversive voice of New Deal Skateboards, which actually helped inform his signature color palette recognized worldwide.

New Deal Skateboard Products proudly announces NEW DEAL x SHEPARD FAIREY Special Super Limited Release Exclusive Authentic Capsule Pop-Up Collection Artist Edition, a collaboration with iconic street and museum artist Shepard Fairey, dropping on 9/28 at 3:43pm pst on newdealskateboards.com.

In celebration of the anniversary of the launch of New Deal Skateboards 30 years ago, Fairey helped relaunch the brand with a groundbreaking exhibition of original New Deal art and ephemera, as well as all new reimagined artwork from over 40 artists, inspired by the brand. Co-curated with New Deal founder Andy Howell and hailed by media insiders as the "Cultural event of the year," the NEW DEAL 1990 Exhibition at Shepard's Subliminal Projects Gallery in Los Angeles brought together skateboarding legends Steve Caballero, Chad Muska, Ed Templeton, and Eli Morgan Gesner, as well as art icons including DALEK, Greg Mike, Jeremy Fish, and dynamic duo Kai & Sunny, among many others, in order to create a 2 month extended exhibition (and an opening reception to remember!).

Just weeks after the exhibition and prior to the scheduled release of a special artist series deck and print collaboration with Shepard, his original iWARNING-ADDICTIVE! painting and 50 limited edition prints of the work from the exhibition were destroyed, along with hundreds of other works of art, in an electrical fire which took Andy Howell's home and art-skate collection. Devastated by the loss, Andy reached out to Shepard to tell him of the news that all the art and prints had been destroyed, and Shepard responded with an offer that brought Andy to tears. "Don't worry, man, I'll make you another one. And we'll get you those prints too. In fact, I bet every artist in the collection would do the same."

Shepard's kindness helped Andy make it through a very challenging first half of 2020, and inspired him to push hard to recreate the collaboration for release at the end of summer. On Shepard's suggestion, the release of the The NEW DEAL x SHEPARD FAIREY SPECIAL SUPER LIMITED RELEASE EXCLUSIVE AUTHENTIC CAPSULE POP-UP COLLECTION ARTIST EDITION Capsule has been aptly scheduled for September 28th, exactly one year later after the opening of the first NEW DEAL 1990 Exhibition.

Suzie Switchblade - a Rare Vintage

HammerSky Vineyards presents...

suziefinal.gif

Susie Switchblade, once a member of the infamous San Francisco Sweets Gang, was captured briefly on skateboards and other useless products by New Deal for causing her usual madness and mayhem before escaping into the underground with a band of shady characters in the early 90’s.

Susie suddenly re-emerged in paintings by Marc McKee and others for the NEW DEAL 1990 Exhibition in Los Angeles in 2019, and was said to have been spotted in the back lot of the gallery wreaking havoc on the night of the opening.

When she heard HammerSky Wines were going to drop limited cases of its finest wines for the 30th Anniversary of New Deal Skateboards, Susie showed up with a corkscrew at the vineyard and exclaimed, “Yes, yes, y’all... Let’s celebrate!”

The vintner and staff at the winery still haven’t fully recovered.
